Vito Forlenza

Vito served as a Science/Biology teacher for grades 7-12 from the late 1960s to late 1970s. He also coached football, baseball, and track during that time. Following teaching, he became a Curriculum Specialist, Curriculum Director, and Assistant Executive Director for the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit 19, serving 20 school districts across five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania from 1979-2004. Since 2004, he has been an Organizational/Educational Consultant for grant writing, program evaluation, strategic planning, group facilitation, and curriculum development, at the Laboratory Extension Specialist for the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Mid –Atlantic (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia) based at Penn State University and the Center for Effective School Practices at Rutgers University.

Vito was a graduate assistant in full time residence (1975-76) in the College of Education, Division of Educational Policy and Leadership, at Penn State. He is active in many state and national educational organizations and the book review editor for the Pennsylvania Educational Leadership. He also is the Educational Leadership Alumni Program Group representative on the Penn State College of Education Alumni Board of Directors. During his life, Vito has published more than 30 articles, book reviews, and curriculum frameworks and consulted with multiple types of organizations. His most recent publications in refereed state journals: Fall 2005, "Learning: Information, Knowledge, Wisdom," in Pennsylvania Educational Leadership; "Rethinking the School Year: Improving Teaching and Learning for Everyone." In The Journal of Education Alternatives; Spring 2006, "The Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System: Questions That Need to be Explored," in Pennsylvania Educational Leadership; Spring 2006, "If It Doesn’t Reach the Kids It Doesn’t Matter," in The Journal of Educational Alternatives.

He served and continues to serve on local and state executive boards and committees. They are Lackawanna College, Penn State Worthington Scranton, Northeast Child Care Services, Greater Pittston YMCA, the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (PASCD). Vito is also Co-chairman of the statewide Influence Committee for the Pennsylvania ASCD. He has been married to his wife Marie since 1969. They have three adult children: A. Michael, Vito, and Kristin.
