Summary of the 2007 CREC-PARSS Building Community Award Winners

The Dubois Area School District Wins Rural Education Award

University Park, Pa. — The Dubois Area School District is winner of the third annual Building Community through Rural Education Award, sponsored by Penn State’s Center on Rural Education and Communities (CREC) and the Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools (PARSS).

The award recognizes a rural school or school district in Pennsylvania that has distinguished itself through innovative practices contributing to the educational experiences for the students it serves, while reaching out to the broader community in which it is located.

Thanks to a partnership with Great American Financial Resources, Dubois School District will receive a $500 award. Dubois School District will also be entered into the national Community And Rural Education Service (CARES) award, sponsored by the National Rural Education Association and Great American Financial Resources. This award offers a $5000 prize and recognition at the National Rural Education Association’s national convention.

Dubois School District partners with local business leaders to pool resources and communicate regarding community needs and the preparation of students to meet the demands of the business world both locally and globally. A group of 25 business leaders meet with district personnel monthly and frequently interacts with the local schools to provide additional resources and assist in stressing career preparation. Graduating seniors also present portfolios of their best work to this grouping of business leaders and engage in mock-interviews in preparation for their real world experiences.

The District has also held Businesses Uniting with Schools Day for the past 5 years, in which around 200 business professionals host teachers in their business and speak to students regarding their careers, education, and the skills necessary to make it in the business world. The program also includes a shadowing experience where students are able to shadow professionals in their fields of interest.

Glendale School District in Crawford County and Solanco School District, in Cambria County each received honorable mentions.

This year’s award was presented jointly by CREC and PARSS at the PARSS Annual Meeting, April 27 in State College, Pa.
