Appointment conditions

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education seeks applications from individuals with scholarly interests and expertise in social studies teaching, learning, and curriculum in elementary and early childhood education. The position is a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank within the Social Studies Education area of Curriculum and Instruction. Faculty members normally teach both undergraduate and graduate courses each year.

The position offers opportunities to prepare pre-service teachers for pre-kindergarten and elementary social studies (PK-4th grade). Service to the department will include program leadership, participating in departmental efforts to attract students into elementary and early childhood education, recruiting and working with undergraduate and graduate students interested in Social Studies Education, and developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to Social Studies Education, including courses in the growing online Master’s Degree program. The position also offers the possibility for community outreach and collaboration with other campus entities, such as the Rock Ethics Institute, learning projects and partnerships in area schools, or Penn State’s child welfare initiatives.

This is a tenure track, 36-week appointment with the possibility of supplementary summer appointments. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Full University benefits apply.   • Engage in research, writing, and other scholarly activities related to elementary social studies or the social education of young children
  • Teach residential undergraduate courses as well as residential and online graduate courses in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, advise graduate students in their programs and research, and supervise graduate teaching-assistants
  • Contribute to Social Studies Education undergraduate and graduate programs, including student recruitment efforts and the online Master’s Degree program
  • Provide leadership for the PK-4 Social Studies Education component of the undergraduate major, including facilitating collegial collaboration with other Penn State campuses that also offer PK-4 Social Studies courses
  • Provide service, outreach, and leadership to the University, educational institutions, agencies, professional organizations, and learned societies

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned research doctorate in education or a closely related field
  • Experience working with young children in school settings
  • Evidence of an established or emerging research trajectory in elementary social studies or the social education of young children

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience as a pre-kindergarten and/or elementary classroom teacher
  • Evidence of expertise in a domain relating to the social education of young children
  • Record of presenting at the conferences of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) or the College & University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies (CUFA)
  • Prior experience as an instructor of a university course on elementary social studies teaching methods
  • Prior experience with or potential for online teaching, leadership in an elementary teacher education program, or working in school-university partnerships
  • Record of professional service to the field of social studies education
