#12 Multicultural Resource Center Graduate Assistant

The Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) provides individual counseling and educational services for undergraduate multicultural students at University Park, and assists students in meeting the challenges associated with education and attaining a degree at a major research institution. MRC counselors work with students on a variety of issues, and the staff is dedicated to helping students succeed and graduate from Penn State.

The Graduate Assistant is a crucial member of the MRC team. This individual must possess and demonstrate a high level of intercultural competence. This individual must also be a strong oral and written communicator. The successful candidate must have strong human relations skills, be organized, and demonstrate sound judgment, time management, and exceptional problem solving abilities.  This individual should have a working knowledge of some of the obstacles multicultural students face at a predominantly white institution, and possess the ability and skill to assist students in navigating their way through the university system. This individual must be able to be a team player and contribute positively to the development and existence of a strong team of professionals in the MRC. We are seeking energetic applicants who have a passion for multicultural education and a strong desire to create a positive collegiate experience for undergraduate students at The Pennsylvania State University.


The MRC Graduate Assistant is a 20-25 hour per week position that reports to one of our full time counselors. While the majority of the work occurs during normal business hours, some of the Graduate Assistant’s responsibilities may take place in the evening and on weekends.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Advise and counsel students on a variety of student issues, primarily focusing on academic support, but also addressing other holistic areas such as social, emotional, physical, spiritual, career, and financial
  • Meet on a weekly basis with supervisor
  • Attend weekly department meetings
  • Assist in planning MRC events (i.e., Orientation, Awards Banquet)
  • Represent the MRC at various programs and information sessions
  • Assist in MRC assessment and evaluation efforts
  • Oversee the work of the MRC Student Leadership Council, including selection and training of Council members
  • Assist staff with tasks related to various scholar programs housed in the MRC
  • Participate and assist in planning staff professional development opportunities
  • Assist the Director with grant application and research projects’ tasks
  • Other duties as assigned
