Graduate Assistant Position Description

The Engineering Advising Center (EAC) in College of Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University serves an important role in the academic life of students. The EAC supports the overall educational mission of the university through promoting and implementing the institutional values of: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Discovery, Excellence, & Community.


The purpose of this position is to support the overall mission and growth of the Engineering Advising Center at University Park. The Graduate Assistant will primarily coordinate the creation of a Peer Advising Program for College of Engineering students. The Graduate Assistant will also have the opportunity to work with first and second-year College of Engineering students who are in pre-major status to assist them with academic planning, the navigation of college and university-wide policies and procedures, and their overall holistic development.

This position works directly with students through email, in-person, and teleconferencing. This position will also involve the recruitment, hiring, and training of Peer Mentors for the Peer Advising Program. This experience will allow the Graduate Assistant to learn how to support students and, more importantly, how to challenge and empower students to take active roles in their educational and academic experience.

This role will serve to enhance the Graduate Assistant's leadership development, presentation, and training skills. The position in the EAC will enable the Graduate Assistant to further develop their critical thinking, reasoning, helping, and decision-making skills.


The Graduate Assistant's responsibilities is influenced by the caseload and type of students. However, typical responsibilities include:

  • Build and expand program development and implementation skills
  • Develop a Peer Advising program training and supervision structure
  • Understand, communicate, and educate students on Penn State and College of Engineering academic policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to: Entrance to Major, Administrative Enrollment Controls, Academic Deadlines, Faculty Senate & ePetitions, Academic Warning/Suspension, etc.
  • Maintain regular office hours for the purpose of training and meeting with students
  • Participating in meetings with students who are seeking guidance or assistance with academic and co-curricular topics
  • Create, develop, and maintain a Peer Advising Program for the College of Engineering
  • Utilize Starfish to track interactions with students for review by self and other advisers in the College of Engineering and across the university;
  • Attend any and all relevant staff, training, orientation, and/or supervisory meetings

  • Engineering Experience is NOT required for this role
  • Enrolled full-time in a related graduate program, preferably related to education
  • Must be able to manage and respect sensitive and confidential information
  • Possess the ability to problem solve effectively
  • Organized and able to multitask
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment
  • Experience working with students
  • Be able to work with students and staff from diverse populations and backgrounds
