Guidelines for the Awarding of Scholarships by the College of Education

What follows is a description of the principles we will be using, with a description of the mechanics of the process. We will continue to modify and refine these points as we gain more experience with the approach.

A. Principles

  1. Award recommendations and decisions are consistent with donor wishes and University policies as published in the approved guidelines for each scholarship fund.
  2. Scholarship funds whose award guidelines target eligible students in specific areas of study are designated “Department-Specific Awards.”
  3. Scholarship funds whose award guidelines target students in any College area of study are designated “College-Wide Awards.”
  4. Awards are typically for no less than $2,000. Trustee Matching Scholarships are the exception at $3,500.
  5. Awards shall be renewed from the previous year provided the approved guidelines permit, the student remains qualified, and funds are available.
  6. Academic merit and financial need are both relevant considerations in the award decision, with the highest priority reserved for meritorious students who have also demonstrated financial need (unless otherwise stipulated by the approved guidelines).
  7. Evidence of a commitment to the field of education is also a relevant consideration, but first-year students, who by definition will have had less time to demonstrate their commitment to the field of education, are eligible for support and warrant careful consideration.
  8. The number and amount of College-Wide awards to students are broadly proportionate to the distribution of students among the College’s departments.

B. Application Process

  1. Each student seeking financial aid from the College of Education will complete a College application form.
  2. The application will be generic so that the information provided by applicants need not be tied to specific scholarships.
  3. Applications from undergraduate and graduate students will be submitted through a Qualtrics survey. The deadline will be April 1 of each year.

C. Award Process

  1. Department-Specific Awards
    • All applications will be sorted according to the applicant’s academic home department and distributed to the respective departments.
    • Each department will also receive a list of the department-specific and college-wide scholarships that are eligible for renewal. Department-specific renewals will take first priority.  A student may be awarded a department-specific scholarship instead of a planned college-wide scholarship renewal provided the amount of the award is equal to or greater than the amount awarded the previous year.
    • Each department will review and use the guiding principles to match its students to the remaining department-specific awards. The results of this matching effort will be forwarded to the Dean’s office.
  2. College-Wide Awards
    • Each department will also use the guiding principles to recommend the remaining applicants (those not chosen for a department-specific scholarship) for College-wide awards.  Recommendations may be made in the form of a single ranked list, or by recommending students for a particular college-wide scholarship. Each department is encouraged to consider and provide additional information regarding the student’s academic or financial status beyond what is provided in the applications. Recommendations will be forwarded to the Dean’s office for consideration (see below).

D. Role of the Office of the Dean

The Office of the Dean:

  1. distributes information about scholarships to students and faculty;
  2. provides document support to enable the department committees to accomplish their functions;
  3. reviews the award finalist recommendations received from the departments, consulting with departments and the advising office as necessary;
  4. makes the award decisions in light of the reports and recommendations from the departments;
  5. informs awardees and requests letters to donors;
  6. posts awards;
  7. reports on individual and aggregate award decisions; and
  8. periodically reviews the effectiveness of the entire award process.
